Fields: Display Selection

Display Selection lets you configure which search results display, which detail display, the availability library information, what type of information sorting will be used in Searching, and the request pickup library for the selected search target for a search profile. Search results displays and detail displays can be customized to show certain pieces of library item information based on the patron’s search profile and the search target in which the item information is located. Each selected search target in a search profile can use an individual search results display, an individual detail display, specific availability library information, a particular type of sorting for the information, and a pickup library.

When users search multiple search targets, and the search results include hits from a Discovery search target that does not have a detail display, users will see only the content for the Discovery search target’s search result display for those hits.

The Discovery administrator database metadata is cached in the Discovery Server application. Any changes to search profiles will not be reflected to the patron in Searching until the metadata cache is refreshed. For more information, see Refreshing the search cache.

Profiles > Display Selection > Next

Profile

Displays the name of the search profile in which you are choosing search displays.

Search Target

Displays the name of the search target for which you are choosing search displays.

Search Display

Specifies the search results display that is to be used to present search results from a particular search target to the patron. When a search profile is created, the Search Display field is set automatically for search targets assigned to the profile. The search results displays that appear in the Search Display list are defined in Displays > Manage Search Results Displays.

Note: When a search target is created, a default search result display is automatically created for the target. This default search results display can be modified using Displays > Manage Search Results Displays. For information, see Managing search result displays.

Detail Display

Specifies the detail display that is to be used to present library item information from a particular search target to the patron. When a search profile is created and search targets are assigned to it, the Detail Display field is set automatically for the search targets that have a configured detail display. The detail displays that appear in the Detail Display list are defined in Displays > Detail Displays. For information, see Managing detail displays.

If a search target assigned to a profile has a MARC-based source site, the Detail Display field list is active and can be modified. If a search target does not have a MARC-based source site, the Detail Display list for that search target is deactivated.

Preferred Shelf Number Library

Specifies which library’s shelf number will be displayed at the title level in the search results display and detail display. Only one library can be specified in this field. For more information, see Displaying shelf number in search results and detail displays.

If you have already set up display codes for the Library search field for specific source sites associated with the profile (see Fields: Display Codes), the software displays these values in this drop-down field. You can select only one option.

If there are no Library display codes available to the current profile, the software displays a text box where you can manually enter your library code using this format:

<data source site entry code>:<library code>

For example, if your Discovery source site entry code is “SD_ILS” and your library code is “MAIN”, then you would enter “SD_ILS:MAIN” in the field.

Important: In order to enable this feature in a search results display or detail display, you must select Preferred Shelf Number from Search Fields for the search results display (see Fields: Choose Search Display Fields) and from the Parent Fields for the detail display (see Fields: Select Fields for a Detail Display).

Availability Library

Specifies the code of the search library for which the Symphony availability of copies will be shown for items from a particular search target. Only search library code can be specified in this text field.

For example, if you type “NORTHLIBS” in the Availability Library field for the Library Search search target, then the copy availability will be shown only for copies of items from the Library Search target that belong to North Library.

Note: This field applies only to Symphony ILS search targets.

This feature is especially useful if you are setting up a limit for a profile (see Fields: Select Profiles).

For more information, see Setting up availability.

Library Name

Specifies the name of a search library if you have enabled Symphony Availability (see Setting up availability).

If you specify Availability Library (above), the name you specify should match that search library. For example, if you want to show availability for items only at NORTHLIB, then you might use “North Library” as the Library Name.

This field is optional. If you specify Availability Library but you do not specify Library Name, the software will display the name of the source site instead. For information about source sites, see Fields: Discovery Source Sites.

If you specify a Library Name but you do not specify Availability Library, the software will replace the name of the source site with the Library Name you specify.

Note: If you have configured your profile and detail display to display holdings information, you will want to make sure that the Library Name you specify here matches the Name you specify for the corresponding Library display code if needed (see Fields: Add/Edit Display Code).

Preferred Sort

Specifies the value that is used to move certain information to the top of the child field list in the detail display for items from a particular search target. For example, if a bibliographic record from the Library Search search target shows that a title has many copies owned by various libraries, you can set the Preferred Sort value to “Main Library” to move all of the copies owned by the Main Library to the top of the copies list in the detail display.

If a search target assigned to a profile has a MARC-based source site, the Preferred Sort field is active and can be modified. If a search target does not have a MARC-based source site, the Preferred Sort field for that search target is deactivated.

The code that you enter is a combination of the Discovery Source Site Entry code (such as "SD_ILS"; for more information about the Search Site Code, see Fields: Add/Edit Discovery Source Site) and the library (Symphony) or location (Horizon) code as found in the ILS (such as "MAIN"). The resulting code that you enter in Preferred Sort should look something like this: SD_ILS:MAIN.

Important: You select sort field for the child list in the Choose Detail Display Options. For example, if you want to sort the child field list so all of the copies owned by the Main Library are at the top of the list, you need to edit the detail display used in the profile and select "Library" as the Sort Field. Then, in Display Selection, enter "Main Library" as the Preferred Sort term. For more information, see Fields: Choose Detail Display Options.
